Ivory Tower 2012: A fresh start
One of the greatest things about Ivory Tower is that each issue begins with a blank slate.
The production of Ivory Tower runs during two classes throughout an academic year: ENGL
3711 and ENGL 3712: Literary Magazine Production Labs I and II, so every year, a new bunch
of English, Journalism, and Art students fund, design, edit, publish, and distribute a magazine
unique to the creators behind the scenes. This year we have a fabulously talented and well-
rounded staff (though I might be biased) of 21 undergraduates and one fantastic advisor, an MFA student.
On the first day of class, we introduced ourselves and discussed our wildest dreams for
Ivory Tower, the 2011-2012 edition. On the second day of class, we elected editors and leaders
and assigned group projects, and since then, we’ve been working to create our vision for Ivory
Tower. We have a fabulous design triumvirate and a web-savvy duo who have been building a
website from scratch. We have talented artists and creative contributors who have been
designing fliers and experimental projects. We have strong leaders and an inspiring advisor who
helps to organize and encourage all of our endeavors.
However, we are only the background of Ivory Tower. The real creation comes from
undergraduates all across campus who write, draw, paint, photograph, sing, and want to share
their talents with the University of Minnesota. Once the staff of Ivory Tower builds a foundation
for this year’s brand new publication, the rest of the undergraduates submit their original work so we can print a magazine worth talking about.
